MONTEFALCO

Its enchanting geographic position earning it a reputation as Umbria’s scenic terrace, Montefalco’s belvedere commands vistas of the entire area of Perugia, Assisi, Foligno, Spello, and Spoleto, and a glimpse of the Apennine reliefs in the distance. Visitors enter through five gates in its Medieval walls. The jewel to be visited is inside the church/museum of San Francesco, which houses frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli on the life of St. Francis of Assisi, dating to 1452, and a nativity scene by Perugino. Nearby, on the Renaissance-era Piazza del Comune, stand the beautiful Palazzo Comunale and the church of San Filippo Neri, now the municipal theatre. The itinerary can continue with a visit to the church of Sant’Agostino, which belongs to the community of Augustinians.
